Genesis of phase composition of zinc-aluminum spinel supported Pt-Sn catalysts for hydrocarbon dehydrogenation

A study has been made of the state of the supported components in Pt-Sn/ZnAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ catalysts in different stages of preparing these catalysts and testing them for catalytic activity. It is shown that the state of the platinum and tin in air-dried specimens is determined by the composition of the impregnating solutions and by the nature of the platinum-tin complexes formed in the catalysts. In the calcined catalysts, no chemical interaction of the tin with the support or with the platinum is observed. It is established that the changes in the catalyst phase composition during service are cyclic. Pt-Sn alloys are formed in the dehydrogenation process, and these alloys break down during the oxidative regeneration of the catalyst.
