Deepwater wells hit new record

Journal Article · · Offshore; (United States)
OSTI ID:6819713
A near record 68 wells were drilled during 1979 in areas with water depths over 600 ft. The first quarter of 1980 indicates drilling at about the same rate as 1979. The number of wells drilled in deepwater areas since 1965 and projected for each year in the future as well as the water depths drilled from 1965 through 1979 are shown graphically. In 1979 Texaco drilled a well off the coast of Canada in water 4,876 ft deep. Costs of deepwater drilling, combined with the availability of rigs and the long period of time required for analysis of the well logs, tend to cause 3 year surges in deepwater drilling. Higher crude oil prices could level out this effect and insure a more even pace in drilling in deepwater areas in the future. (BLM)
