Phase stability of a series of Ln{sub 2}BaCuO{sub 5} (Ln = Dy,Er,Eu,Gd,Ho,Sm,Yb) has been studied as a function of oxygen partial pressure and temperature by x-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric, and differential thermal analyses. Above the critical temperature Td{sub d}, phase decomposition with a decrease in sample weight took place. The behavior of rare-earth compounds with the Y{sub 2}BaCuO{sub 5} structure under different oxygen partial pressures and heat treatments is correlated with the effective ionic radii.
