Bagasse used as fuel in boilers to generate electricity

The generation of process heat and electric power at the Hilo Coast Processing Co. (HCPC) using bagasse as the boiler fuel is discussed. The Pepeekeo Sugar factory of HCPC burned 2.7 million tons of bagasse in 1979, and produced 140 x 10/sup 6/ kWh of electricity and 2.194 x 10/sup 9/ lb of steam. 10.5 x 10/sup 6/ kWh of electricity produced were sold to the Hawaiian Electric Co. This represents abut 23% of the annual power demand for the entire Island of Hawaii. (LCL)
