Having accomplished the world's record drilling depth (Oklahoma's 30,050-ft 1 E.R. Baden), Lone Star Producing Co. is now on the way to capturing second place in the depth competition. Spudded last Nov., the 1 Bertha Rogers near Burns Flat, Okla., drilled out under the surface casing string and on to 14,205 ft where a record 14-in. intermediate string was set in late April. The well is slated for 29,000-ft--at which depth its cost will have reached an estimated $5 million. The probable geological section is shown by a graphical representation. Two casing program alternatives also are shown. The target is the Anadarko Basin's deep Hunton, a formation that was noncommercial in Lone Star's Baden test, but one that still holds hope for commercial gas at extreme depths. Top of the Hunton is anticipated in this well at around 27,600 ft, as shown by the geological section. The high pressure Springer, expected to appear at about 23,000 ft, also will be tested.
