Filtration of solvent-water extracted tar sand

Recovery of tar from tar sands is accomplished by employing a solvent extraction process in which tar sand is slurried in a hydrocarbon solvent with sufficient water added to the slurry to form a grainy slurry, the water being from about 1% to about 7% by wt of the tar sand. The slurry is then filtered and release of fines is controlled to maintain an easily filtered slurry. (6 claims)
