A note on the Stefan number in slab melting and solidification

The Stefan number St is ordinarily described as the ratio of sensible to latent heat in a phase change process. We show that for a particular phase change process St does indeed approximate twice that ratio, and that the ratio is independent of time. The usefulness of the result for latent heat thermal energy storage analysis is noted via an example.
