Investigation of the timing properties of domestic BGO scintillator
Light pulse shape, number of photoelectrons per unit energy, and obtainable time resolution were studied with BGO scintillator coupled to a XP2020 photomultiplier and compared with the similar measurements on NaI(Tl) and ST401 plastic scintillator. The photoelectron yield of BGO was measured to be equal to 687/MeV by single-photon method. The BGO scintillation decay curve was studied and we found that it could be resolved into two main lifetime components tau/sub 1/ = 60 ns, tau/sub 2/ = 310 ns with relative intensities I/sub 1/ = 9%, I/sub 2/ = 86% respectively. The time resolution of the system with start channel NE111-XP2020 and stop channel 7 x 11 x 12 mm/sup 3/ BGO-XP2020 is obtained as FWHM = 0.70 ns at energy window E> or =1 MeV with /sup 60/Co source.
