Sulfur adsorption and poisoning of metallic catalysts

A review of data concerning the mechanisms involved in the poisoning of metal catalysts by sulfur in certain hydrogenation processes is presented. It has been shown that the adsorption of sulfur on most metals is characterized by a very high energy of interaction and by most important modifications of the electronic and structural properties of the surface. Studies of model catalyst reactions on single crystals which have been poisoned in a controlled manner have shown that the poisoning is complete when the surface is saturated with adsorbed sulfur, but the poisoning effects were not found to be exclusively due to blocking of the site occupied by the sulfur. Certain potential sites adjacent to the occupied sites can also be deactivated by a purely electronic effect (weakening of the electronic density due to the electronegative character of the sulfur). In addition, sulfur can displace certain adsorbed species from their normal adsorption sites and thus change their reactivity in a negative or positive direction. The studies done on single crystals at low pressures have added greatly to the understanding of the poisoning mechanism, but studies under atmospheric pressure or the high pressures of operating conditions are necessary for positive understanding of the mechanisms. 65 references are cited.
