Sloss COFCAW project--further evaluation of performance during and after air injection

A COFCAW (Combination of Forward Combustion and Waterflooding) project was conducted in 960 acres of the Sloss field, Kimball County, Nebraska, from early 1963 until July 1971. In July 1971, air injection was terminated with water injection being continued. Significant volumes of oil banked up by the COFCAW operations have been produced as a result of continued water injection. Performance of the field following termination of air injection is discussed. In addition, data obtained from 5 core holes drilled within a single quadrant of one of the 5-spot patterns are presented. These data indicate that (1) burning took place in the more permeable top part of the pay; (2) the average vertical sweep of the heated zone (> 350/sup 0/F) was about 28%; (3) the areal sweep of the heated zone was about 50%; (4) the residual oil saturation in this zone was about 6%; and (5) anhydrite precipitation took place in some of the pore space of the rock subjected to high temperature. The core data and water drive performance, after terminating air injection, suggest modifications in future COFCAW operations. These modifications are discussed.
