A study was carried out on the kinetics of thermal bimolecular reactions leading to the reduction of nitroxyl radicals by hydrazo compounds in a nematic liquid crystal. A positive deviation in the experimental reaction rate constant from the Arrhenius curve obtained in the isotropic phase at higher temperatures is found in the pretransition region of the isotropic phase and in the meso phase. A possible mechanism for the effect of the meso phase on the activation energy of the reactions studied was examined. A method was proposed for describing the temperature dependence of the experimental rate constant in the nematic phase and an equation was obtained relating the rate constant with the order parameter of the liquid crystal and other physical parameters of the solventreagent system.
