Survey - how pulp mills use and handle decayed wood

Questionnaires were sent to 27 pulp mills in the Pacific Coast States of Alaska to California requesting information on the presence of decay in wood and chip supplies and its effects on pulp yield and quality. Analysis of the 15 replies showed that mills could not or did not accurately quantify decay in their wood supply. Only 6 kraft mills surveyed were able to quantify losses in pulp yield and quality caused by decay. No mills had a routine method for determining the effect of decay on pulp yield and quality, but most would use such a method if available. Most mills had chip contracts which specified an allowable decay content from 0.5% to 4%. Two methods are proposed for determining the effect of decay on pulp yield and quality in standing timber and in chips. (Refs. 19).
