Estimating top weights for oak sawtimber in Indiana
An increased need for wood fiber for all uses has focused attention on expanded utilization of the hardwood resource including logging residues. Regression equations that predict the total ovendry (OD) top weight and top weight of material equal to or greater than 4 inches in diameter were developed based on the diameter at breast height (DBH) and merchantable height of 54 white, red, and black oak from southern Indiana. Tables generated from the regression equations are presented. The predicted total OD top weight ranged from 675 pounds for a tree with a 10-inch DBH and 8 feet of merchantable log to 2,034 pounds for a 22-inch, 40-foot tree. The amount of bark on an OD basis in the top averaged 20.1 percent for all DBH classes. The total top weight regression equation for Indiana oak is similar in form to equations developed for black oak for the Tennessee Valley and Appalachia hardwoods. However, substantial differences in actual weights exist. (Refs. 16).
