Professor W.W.S. Charters was the 1993 recipient of the Farrington Daniels Award, the major individual honour bestowed by the International Solar Energy Society. One of the conditions of the Award is that the recipient must present a lecture at an ISES World Congress. In the following article, the written form of Professor Charter's lecture is given, which was presented at the ISES World Congress in Budapest in August 27, 1993. Highlights of his lecture include sustainable development, renewable energy waves, framework for solar development, future roles for solar energy, and his personal solar activities.
