Texas A and M University's one-dimensional wave equation method of pile analysis is a powerful tool for the design of piles, selection of hammers and other accessories for installation, and evaluation of the load capacity of the piling as it is being driven in hostile environments. A good soil profile and data on the strength properties of the various formations are necessary input for the wave equation technique of determining the pile size and thickness that can be driven to the desired penetration without drilling or jetting. The wave equation to determine the soil resistance acting on a pile from the pile-driving record of blows/foot was successfully used during the installation of platforms in the North Sea Forties field. Evaluation of the load capacity of each pile from the soil-resistance data permitted the use of only nine piles/leg, resulting in considerable construction savings.
