Integral capture and fission cross sections for /sup 241/Am and /sup 243/Am in the CFRMF

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6810974

This report documents the measurements made to obtain integral capture and fission cross sections for /sup 241/Am and /sup 243/Am in the fast neutron field of the Coupled Fast Reactivity Measurements Facility (CFRMF). The integral cross sections are derived from measurements of the /sup 241/Am(n,f), /sup 241/Am(n,..gamma..) /sup 242g/Am, /sup 243/Am(n,f) and /sup 243/Am(n,..gamma..) /sup 244g/Am integral reaction rates using gamma spectrometric and isotope dilution alpha spectrometric (IDAS) techniques. Integral fission rates for both /sup 241/Am and /sup 243/Am are based on the measurement of the emission rates of prominent gamma rays in the ..beta../sup -/ decay of /sup 140/Ba and /sup 140/La using calibrated Ge(Li) detectors. A fission yield of 5.5% was used in this analysis. The integral capture rate for /sup 241/Am is based on the measurement of the /sup 242/Cm production cross section using IDAS. The integral capture rate of /sup 243/Am to the /sup 244g/Am ground state is based on the measurement of the emission rates of the 744.1-keV and 898.2-keV gamma rays in the ..beta../sup -/ decay of /sup 244g/Am using calibrated Ge(Li) detectors. Details concerning sample preparation, sample mass assay using IDAS and gamma spectrometry, and Am-Cm chemical separation procedures are described.
