A process is described to produce ultra high purity oxygen from a gaseous feed comprising: (a) introducing gaseous feed containing oxygen, light impurities and heavy impurities into an absorbing column; (b) passing gaseous feed up the absorbing column and absorbing heavy impurities from ascending gas into descending liquid; (c) condensing resulting gas, passing a first liquid portion thereof into a stripping column and passing a second portion thereof down the absorbing column as the descending liquid; (d) passing first liquid portion down the stripping column and stripping light impurities from the downflowing liquid into upflowing vapor to produce ultra high purity oxygen liquid; (e) vaporizing ultra high purity oxygen liquid and passing resulting vapor up the stripping column as the upflowing vapor; and (f) recovering product ultra high purity oxygen.
