In the regeneration stage of the double alkali FGD process which uses lime as a regenerant, the flow-mixing of a slurry of lime with a sodium bisulfite solution in a truncated ''Y'' (inlet tubes 0.25 in ID; common outlet tube 0.50 in ID, 2 ft long) causes the reaction to occur essentially instantaneously if no settling of the slurry occurs during mixing. With limestone as the regenerant, initial flow-mixing in the ''Y'' did not produce 100Vertical Bar3< calcium utilization but did reduce the total reaction time by a factor of ten (in comparison with a stirred backmix reactor). An initially mixed system with no subsequent stirring is approximately as efficient as a stirred system with no initial mixing. Mixing prevents agglomeration caused by the precipitation of the insoluble products on aggregates or reactants, as occurs in the traditional regeneration process when the reactants enter a backmix reactor through separate ports. In the experimental studies, the parameters that were varied included the molarity of sodium bisulfite, the molar flow ratio of the reactants, the flow rates of the reactants, and the residence time.
