A Nd:YAG photocathode laser system is currently being assembled to service the BNL Accelerator Test Facility. The system utilizes a diode-pumped, actively mode-locked Nd:YAG oscillator as the seed for two lamp pumped amplifier stages and subsequent frequency quadruplying. This laser will simultaneously illuminate the metal cathode of a 1{1/2} cell S-band RF gun with a quantum efficiency of 1{times}10{sup {minus}4} at 266 nm, and provide 10 mJ of 1 {mu}m light to control an optical semiconductor switch of the facility`s CO{sub 2} laser for laser particle acceleration experiments. Alternatively, pulse trains of up to 250 micropulses can be generated for FEL oscillator experiments. Up to 200 {mu}J at 266 nm in a single pulse are required for sufficient charge to be injected into the facility`s 50 MeV linac and delivered to the various beamline experiments.
