About 10% of Venezuela's prospective area has produced some 33 billion bbl of oil with another 18 billion bbl proved. Yet following more than 50 yr of exploration, even the Maracaibo Basin is yielding new reserves in the form of oil from the Cretaceous under the lake. Other areas to be explored are the 200,000 sq miles of the off shore and the Orinoco Heavy Oil Belt. This work examines Venezuela's plans, potential, and capabilities with emphasis on the off shore, including Lake Maracaibo, Maraven's M-6 steam flood program and the Orinoco Heavy Oil Belt. The industry has embarked on a $5.5 billion, 5-yr plan to upgrade production to drill more than 1,000 wildcats and to develop heavy oils in the Orinoco region.
