Painting underwater and in the splash zone

A properly prepared surface is necessary for a good coating adhesion to a damp or submerged substrate. Rust, fouling, oil, and other contaminants must be completely removed to leave a clean, textured surface. The job is not difficult for a diver to undertake, but it is quite slow and costly. Blast cleaning is rated as the best method for preparing steel surfaces, because it both cleans well and provides a surface ideal for effective coating adhesion. Any coating operation involving divers is relatively costly (approx. $350 per day per diver and tender). Splash zone compounds cost about $16/gal kit and cover from 7 to 12 sq ft. Underwater coatings with a brushable consistency may sell for between $11 and $20 per gal and cover between 50 and 250 sq ft (depending on coating thickness and operational efficiency). (16 refs.)
