The Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in September 1991, entered into an agreement with the Federal Office of Surface Mining to prepare a coal mine-map database and to produce 1:24,000 scale individual coalbed base maps showing documented underground mined areas throughout the Southwest Virginia Coalfield. Environmental remediation evaluation is hampered by the lack of comprehensive maps at a 1:24,000 scale showing the location and extent of surface and underground mining. The Division of Mineral Resources (DMR) of the Department has undertaken the construction of a geographic mine database for the coalfield. It is intended to serve as a much needed tool for initial evaluation of many coalfield related concerns. This project was prefaced by the geologic mapping of the entire coalfield. Forty-eight 7.5-minute quadrangles were mapped by the USGS and the DMR over a period of fourteen years. From the geologic maps, coalcrop maps showing the outcrop expression and extent of nearly forty major coalbeds are being prepared and digitized. Coal mine maps were collected, indexed, and reduced for application to individual coalbed maps. The final product is a comprehensive digital map of each major coalbed showing all documented surface, auger, and underground mining. Each underground mine polygon can be linked, via an integrated GIS, to a database of mine identification information.
