Photocatalytic hydrogenation of ethylene (PHE) was studied on some bimetal-loaded TiO/sub 2/ powders and on monometal loaded samples. The metals employed were Pd, Pt, Cu, and Ni. For the selective production of ethane, the combination of Pt and Cu as cocatalysts showed a collective effect in the titled reaction. When the selectivity of produced C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ to CH/sub 4/ was improved by the optimum ratio of Pt to Cu on TiO/sub 2/, the volume of the concurrently evolved H/sub 2/ was diminished. This suggested that the Pt surface which was spatially controlled with the codeposited Cu afforded a desirable geometry for the photohydrogenation of C/sub 2/H/sub 4/. A possible reaction mechanism and the advantage of the composite surface of the bimetal-loaded TiO/sub 2/ powders are discussed.
