Bergen repowering project nears operation

The PSE&G Bergen Generating Station, now about to reenter service, provides a good example of why plant operators consider repowering direct-fired plants with gas turbines. The resulting system has a similar output, but greater efficiency and lower emissions. The 400 million Phase 1 of the Bergen Repowering Project involved the elimination of the boilers, removal of an oil tank, overhaul of steam turbine Unit No. 1, and the addition of four gas turbine-generators and HRSGs. The resulting combined cycle system will have an output of 650 MW. HRSGs are by ABB. Steam conditions are: main steam-1550 psig/940{degree}F, reheat steam-285 psig/875{degree}F, LP steam-80 psig/470{degree}F. All four HRSGs exhaust into a common stack, with individual flues, which is much lower than the two stacks of the original boilers. 3 figs.
