The authors report analytical properties of cadmium-selective electrodes based on chalcogenide glasses of the systems Cd-Ag/sub 2/S As/sub 2/S/sub 3/. In order to explain the electrochemical activity of the electrodes and establish possible mechanisms for their response, the authors studied the membrane surfaces by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and examined the systems with regard to the glass formation and short-range order. The glasses were synthesized from previously prepared compounds. The starting materials were special purity arsenic, sulfur, and cadmium sulfide, and analytical grade silver sulfide and cadmium iodide. The samples used to prepare the electrodes were ground with abrasive powder, and expoxied into the end of a plastic tube. A silver wire was used as the internal reference electrode and the selectivities of the electrodes obtained were determined by the method of mixed solutions. Glass formation ranges in the systems studied and their compositions are shown in a table. Compared to cadmium-selective crystalline electrodes the proposed electrodes were 30 to 100 times more sensitive to cadmium ions in acid media and 5 to 30 times more selective in the presence of alkali metal, thallium, barium, nickel, and iron ions.
