The Philadelphia Electric Company uses a chemical treatment called the ''NaPEG'' process to decontaminate mineral insulating oil. Developed by the Franklin Institute Research of Philadelphia, NaPEG is a sodium compound of polyethylene glycol. Properly mixed with the oil containing PCB's, it ''strips'' the chlorine atoms from the PCB molecules. Byproducts are common salt plus dark-colored, harmless residues, which settle out of solution leaving ''clean'' oil for reuse. The residue is easily disposed of.
