Domestic demand for motor gasoline in 1977 was 2.6 billion barrels or 7.2 million barrels per day. The 1977 motor gasoline demand showed an increase of 2.6 percent over the 1976 level, while the demand for total petroleum products increased by 5.2 percent. The historical steady increase in motor gasoline demand was interrupted in 1974 when it dropped by 2.1 percent because of the oil embargo of October 1973 to March 1974. The following year, 1975, motor gasoline demand rose by 2.1 percent putting the rate of demand back at the 1973 level. After reviewing demand factors to 1967, consumption patterns by sectors and supply and demand data are tabulated for 1972-1977. Data on motor gasoline supply (1967-1977) regarding production, imports, and stocks are presented. Forecasts for supply and demand are given for 1978-1979 emphasizing the 1978 DOE forecast. (MCW)
