The effect of various types of structural modification on the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and hydrophile-lipophile balances (HLB) of certain surfactants has been considered. Using the concept of effective chain length for the substituted species, an index of hydrophobicity (1) has been defined. It is hoped that such an index will allow one to choose surfactants for particular purposes in a less arbitrary fashion than heretofore. (23 refs.)
