Stellarator with plasma aspect ratios in the range of 3.5 to 5 can be created using the Compact Torsatron configurations. Stable operation at high ..beta.. should be possible in these devices if a vertical field coil system is designed to avoid breaking of the magnetic surfaces at finite /beta). The direct loss of energetic particles can be high, but the addition of an external quadrupole field can reduce these losses. Such a system looks attractive as a reactor. 9 refs; 1 fig.
