Critical current of /sup 3/He-A in narrow channels

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)

The critical current J/sub c/ of superfluid /sup 3/He-A in 0.8-..mu..m-diam channels has been measured by the observation of the pressure difference along the channels versus the mass current. During warming, J/sub c/ was found to decrease by about 30% at cylindrical temperature dependence (T/sub B/A (cyl)) and by another 30% at T/sub B/A; T/sub B/A(cyl) is the reduced B..-->..A transition temperature in the narrow flow channels, with T/sub B/A(cyl)/T/sub B/A = 0.92 at 27.4 bars. Above T/sub B/A a second dissipative mechanism was observed at lower currents. These features are believed to be associated with the ends of the channels.
