Control ammonia nitrogen with single-stage nitrification

In the biological conversion of ammonia using the activated-sludge process, the principal factor governing nitrification is the solids residence time (SRT), which must be higher than that required for removal of carbonaceous matter. The SRT increases with temperature, ammonia nitrogen concentration and dissolved oxygen, and the pH value should be 7.0 or above. Toxic metals can inhibit nitrification. Examples of calculations are given for controlling SRT. Successful operation of single-stage nitrification at Chicago's West-Southwest sewage treatment plant is reported.
