High count rate enhancement of CONAC: results of laboratory acceptance tests

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6789355

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) co-sponsored Continuous Online Nuclear Analyzer of Coal (CONAC) was developed by Science Applications, Inc. (SAI), and has previously undergone laboratory and field acceptance tests. High count rate (HCR) electronics and computer software have been developed by SAI that will allow improvement of the CONAC germanium detector measurement cycle from 3 hours to approximately 20 minutes. This HCR enhancement was tested in the laboratory at SAI using a laboratory CONAC that did not duplicate all CONAC functions, but did allow test of the germanium detector. This paper discusses results obtained during HCR laboratory tests measuring sulfur, ash, Btu's and chlorine in coal. Data are presented for germanium detector measurement accuracy and precision tests, and also for tests examining effects of different measurement cycles and different coal-detector geometries. Plans for integrating various detector outputs into one consistent reporting methodology are also reviewed. 14 references, 12 figures, 10 tables.
