The hypernuclear weak decay is examined in a shell model framework, using a complete strangeness-changing weak {Lambda}N{r_arrow}NN transition potential that includes the exchange of {pi}, K, {eta} as well as {rho}, {omega}, and K{sup {asterisk}}. The total and partial rates as well as the parity-violating asymmetries are compared to experimental data for light s- and p-shell nuclei. The inclusion of heavier mesons strongly influences the asymmetry which is found to agree with new KEK data on {sup 5}{sub {Lambda}}He with much reduced uncertainties. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
