Mechanism of ''red'' luminescence flash emitted by electron-irradiated CdS single crystals

An investigation was made of a ''red'' luminescence (lambda/sub max/ = 720 nm) flash emitted at 77 K by electron-irradiated cadmium sulfide. Determination of the steady-state photoluminescence and excitation spectra, and of the flash luminescence, pumping, and stimulation, together with the temperature dependences of the flash parameters made it possible to suggest a new mechanism for the optical stimulation of the luminescence based on a model of a complex flash luminescence center. The mechanism postulates modulation of the probabilities of intercenter electron transitions because of a change in the charge state of one of the components of a complex center.
