Spark yields of S{sub 2}F{sub 10}, S{sub 2}OF{sub 10}, and S{sub 2}O{sub 2}F{sub 10} in SF{sub 6}

There has been recent interest in the production of S{sub 2}F{sub 10} by spark discharges in SF{sub 6} due to the very high toxicity of this decomposition product. Improvements in detection sensitivity to below 10 parts-per-billion (1 in 10{sup 8}) using a cryogenic-enrichment gas chromatographic technique with an electron capture detector has permitted the detection of S{sub 2}F{sub 10} produced by a single spark discharge for energy deposited down to 10 J/l. The S{sub 2}F{sub 10} yield (order of 10{sup {minus}10} mol/J) was found to depend on the presence of moisture and on electrode condition, with low moisture and conditioned electrode resulting in the highest yields. The formation of two other products S{sub 2}OF{sub 10} and S{sub 2}O{sub 2}F{sub 10}, both electronegative and possible interferents in S{sub 2}F{sub 10} detection were also investigated. Because of the lack of commercially available S{sub 2}F{sub 10}, production of S{sub 2}F{sub 10} by spark discharge under well defined conditions may be used in generating reference standards of this compound. Comparison of the yields of these disulfur compounds in spark to corona and arc discharges will be made.
