Investigation of routes of contamination of plants with polonium 210 and lead 210

Studies were conducted in a system simulating a region of high natural radioactivity. Superficial parts of barley plants were contaminated with /sup 210/Po and /sup 210/Pb. In other experiments tops of plants were cut off and the roots were exposed to the radioisotopes. In the first group of plants the concentration of /sup 210/Po and /sup 210/Pb in the lower leaves was 14 to 17 times higher in the experimental zone than in the control zone. Polonium-210 and /sup 210/Pb accumulated in the roots of all plants and the increase was greater in roots of plants with tops removed. The data confirmed the possibility of appreciable local aerial contamination of plants with daughter products of radon fission and that such contamination is present in territories with a high level of natural radioactivity.
