An ultrafast, hybrid mode-locked semiconductor laser-diode system has been used to seed a flash-lamp-pumped Cr:LiSAF regenerative amplifier system, producing subpicosecond pulses with mullijoule output pulse energy. This system has the potential to eliminate argon-ion-pumped-based, ultrafast laser systems. {copyright} 1997 Optical Society of America
