The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 requires that all existing and proposed underground mines develop subsidence control plans before a permit will be issued. Applicants need to assess the site and be aware of methods of subsidence prevention and mitigation. Land usage above the site should be included. The article describes the use of mining decision matrices in assessing the potential of a mining site.
