Corrosion of reinforcement results in tensile loading of the bond between reinforcement and concrete. Double cantilever beam tests were performed to measure the toughness of the reinforcement bar/concrete interface in tensile loading. The sample mean toughness was determined to be 0.115 N/mm. The bar/concrete toughness has a similar magnitude to reported values of bulk concrete toughness. Hence, the fracture properties of the interface and the bulk concrete are equally important in the optimization of reinforced concrete durability.
