Slab transmission and reflection for point source and point detector

Conference · · Transactions of the American Nuclear Society; (United States)

Many shielding problems involve a localized source and small detector separated by a plane slab of material. Although primary shielding data have been generated for a point source in an infinite medium and for a parallel beam incident on a plane slab, virtually no systematic data have been generated for the generic configuration shown. In this paper, the authors derive some analytic expressions for transmission and reflection in this configuration and compare with results of Monte Carlo calculations. In addition, they consider how the contribution from scattered radiation builds up as the area of the slab is increased from narrow beam to broad beam conditions.
