Trans-Canada eyes plans for Sable Island line

Trans-Canada Pipe Lines Ltd., will incorporate two companies to distribute Sable Island natural gas to Canada's Atlantic provinces through a regional pipeline by 1982. One firm would ship gas to the mainland if and when Sable Island reserves, estimated at 1-3 trillion cu ft, go on production. A second firm would lay and operate a pipeline system to distribute gas to consumers. Until Sable Island gas goes on production, the regional pipeline would be supplied by propane shipped from Sarnia, Ont., to the Port Hawkesbury area, where it would be stored in salt domes. According to Trans-Canada Vice President G. Leslie, initial plans are to condense Sable Island gas at or near the well head and ship it by tanker to the pipeline head at the Strait of Canso. If sufficient reserves are proved, Trans-Canada would eventually lay an underwater pipeline from Sable Island to Port Hawkesbury, N.S. A 24 in., 125 mi underwater pipeline would cost an estimated $185 million and could transport approx. 350 million cu ft/day of gas. The Trans-Canada proposal competes with a proposal by Q and M Pipe Lines Ltd., which wants to lay a line from Montreal to the Maritime Provinces.
