Based on sphere-cal results, the gel-sphere preparation conditions were modified to improve the gel-sphere properties as they related to pellet fabrication. The best sphere-cal results were obtained with opaque microspheres with a diameter 50 to 400 ..mu..m in the dried state. The preferred gelation conditions yielded dried spheres with larger crystallite size (approx. = 15 nm) and lower BET surface area (approx. = 10 m/sup 2//g).
