The possibility of producing ethanol for use in motor fuel from molasses containing 31% sucrose and 24% invert sugars was evaluated in a pilot program at the currently idle 3600 proof-gal/day rum factory next to the Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Co.'s Puunene factory by a standard fermentation process yielding 73 gal of 95% ethanol per ton of molasses as well as by-product liquid stillage and yeast. The indicated production cost of $1.26/gal is higher than the actual value of alcohol used as a component of unleaded motor fuel, even without considering associated blending, transporting, and marketing costs.
