An experiment to measure the heat transfer characteristics of flowing liquid mercury
- Oak Ridge National Lab., TN (United States)
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), an accelerator-based user facility to be built in Oak Ridge, is presently being designed by a multi-laboratory consortium. The SNS uses a high-energy beam of protons (1 GeV) interacting with a flowing liquid mercury target to produce neutrons that will be used for scattering research. The target will be constructed of stainless steel while flowing liquid mercury is required to cool both the target structural material as well as remove internal heat generated by the spallation process. Total energy deposition within the 24- x 9- x 65-cm target is {approximately}600 kW. Cooling of the target must be ensured to prevent overheating and potential damage to the target structure. The authors discuss the Mercury Thermal Hydraulic Loop (MTHL), an experimental facility designed to study the heat transfer characteristics of liquid mercury under prototypic SNS conditions.
