Hearings were conducted to investigate the possible impacts of geothermal energy exploration in the Island Park area of the Targhee National Forest. The proposed development of these resources is about 13 miles from Old Faithful Geyser. Mr. Glen Bean, regional director of the Park Service, says there is a possibility that use of geothermal resources west of Yellowstone National Park would impair or destroy the geysers and geothermal features in the park. Specifically, the public hearing reviewed the draft environmental impact statement. The Chief of the Forest Service presented testimony on how he believes the development will affect planning and management of the Targhee National Forest.
