The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is a proposed neutron scattering facility centered at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It is designed to use a 1-MW proton beam to provide a 0.5-{micro}s neutron pulse at a 60-Hz frequency. The target material is mercury. The containment vessel for the flowing mercury is constructed of Type 316SS. One of the concerns for the containment vessel is radiation damage due to the incident 1000-MeV protons and secondary particles (both neutrons and protons). The calculations of radiation damage will be critical in determining the predicted lifetime of the target. The three areas of radiation damage investigated are displacements per atom (dpa), helium production, and hydrogen production. The cross sections for the production of atomic displacements per atom (dpa), helium production, and hydrogen production. The cross sections for the production of atomic displacements, helium, and hydrogen have been calculated via computer codes. Low- (E < 20 MeV) and high- (E > 20 MeV) energy cross sections were calculated using SPECTER and the LAHET code system (LCS), respectively. SPECTER bases its cross-section calculations on NDF/B cross-section libraries. The LCS is a Monte Carlo code for the transport and interactions of nucleons, pions, and muons.
