  1. Mountain Fuel Supply Co., Salt Lake City, UT (United States)
This paper reports that Mountain Fuel Supply Co. used the electrofusion process exclusively in a pilot area to help identify any limitations caused by using the process and to compare the cost of electrofusion to the cost of conventional fusion. A company crew was trained and required to use the electrofusion process to install all service lines and repair all broken gas lines in a specific area. Electrofusion was first developed in Germany and the U.S. for joining small, non-pressurized plastic drain lines. An American company, R and G Sloan, obtained a patent in the 1960s for its design. Gaz de France began experimenting with electrofusion in the early 1970s and after 9 years the process was authorized for use throughout the French national gas company.
