The individual processes and phenomena attending secondary cell operation are discussed and experimental data are presented, concerning lithium deposition and cycling, ionic solvation, cathode construction and discharge efficiency, and solvent purification. Solvents of particular interest are propylene carbonate, butyrolactone, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, and acetonitrile.
