An electric battery has a positive electrode and a negative electrode and a separator between the electrodes. The separator comprises a sheet of electrolyte-permeable insulating material of the type which exhibits a substantial increase in thickness when wet. The separator extends above the electrodes. At least one of the free-end portions extending above the electrodes is folded over upon itself at least once above the electrodes to provide at least one additional thickness of the sheet material above the electrodes. Upon increasing in thickness when wet with electrolyte the material will extend over the top of an adjacent electrode.
