Variable valve lift/timing mechanism

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6778345
A valve train is described for an internal combustion engine of the type having a body means defining a cylinder with a port. The valve train includes a valve with an axial extending valve stem located for axial movement in the port and normally biased to a predetermined position. A valve actuator is spaced from the valve and is operable to effect reciprocation of the valve; a rocker arm is pivotably supported at one end on the valve stem and at its other end engaging the valve actuator. The body means includes a fixed overhead support means extending over the rocker arm and spaced therefrom a predetermined distance. A lash adjuster includes a plunger means operatively positioned in the overhead support means with the plunger means in having all outboard end projecting toward the valve stem in substantial coaxial alignment therewith. A pivotable eccentric means operatively located in the overhead support means so as to substantially overlie the other end of the rocker arm. An upper reaction member is pivotably supported at one end by the outboard end of the plunger means, the opposite end of the upper reaction member being adapted to be engaged by the eccentric. A spring means is operatively associated with the rocker arm and with the upper reaction member to bias the opposite end of the upper reaction member into engagement with the eccentric and to bias the other end of the rocker arm into engagement with the valve actuator.
